What Is a Level?
A level is a tool used to determine whether a surface is perfectly horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb). It helps ensure things like shelves, cabinets, and frames are straight and properly aligned.
How a Level Works
Most traditional levels use a bubble vial filled with liquid, and when the bubble sits centered between two lines, the surface is level. If the bubble shifts to one side, the surface is uneven.
Some levels also include vertical and diagonal vials to check for plumbness on vertical or diagonal surfaces. Make sure you are using the right vial for the surface orientation.
How to Choose a Level
Handling everyday home projects? Use a spirit level. This is the standard bubble level used for hanging shelves, mounting TVs, installing cabinets, or checking appliances.
